Financial Times

The article was based on the rise of the Spreadbetting industry and how providers are no longer relying on volatility in equity and commodity markets to maintain their trading volumes. According to the latest survey by ComPeer, for the first half of 2008, Spreadbetting volumes have nearly trebled since the equivalent period in 2007. Volumes reached record levels in the first quarter, although they marginally fell away in the second quarter of the year. This coincided with equity bargains dropping 16% year on year in the first quarter, and fallling a further 8% to 2.2 million deals in the second quarter.
